Why do we call it: The Lava Waterfall Tour? It is because the name Hraunfoss when directly translated from Icelandic, it means Lava waterfalls, and as the name implies, Hraunfoss describes waterfalls that emerge from underground lava tubes from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field. It is right next to Barnafoss, a waterfall which comes from a normal river.
On this tour we start from Reykjavik and head on to Borgarnes village, on the way we go through a 6 km tunnel that reaches a depth of 165m below sea level. From there we carry on to Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. After that we can go study some Icelandic culture in Snorrastofa Research Centre in Reykholt. Then we continue to the Lava Waterfalls and in the same place we will see Barnafossar, these water falls are one of Iceland’s hidden jewels and you will be very impressed by their natural breathtaking beauty.
After all this we travel through a fjord called Hvalfjordur, or Whale Fjord as it would translate from Icelandic. This is one of Icelands deepest bays, and we will pass remnents of the old Icelandic Whaling industry. We of course stop in few places on the way to witness Icelandic nature at it’s finest.
